Cirque du Cyclisme"*

*"Cirque du Cyclisme" June 5, 6,& 7 2009 in Leesburg Virginia,* is a festival celebrating
vintage lightweight racing and touring bicycles, and the artisans and craft
persons carrying on the tradition (http://www.cirqueducyclisme.com/).
It includes riding, a large swap meet, and a show involving 100 or more
of the very best modern steel and vintage racing and touring bikes from
the glory days of the sport. Located at the Loudoun
County Fairgrounds (on the W&OD, just west of Leesburg).

Number of North America's premier
custom builders will be there, showing their best work and responding
to your questions. This will include some of today's leaders, like Brian
Baylis, Steve Bilenky, Rene Herse/Mark Nobilette,, and
Peter Weigle. Plus, many of the best of the new builders, the stars of
the future, will show their latest creations. They're coming from the
West Coast, New England, and the heartland to show why so many
sophisticated riders are choosing today's steel customs over popular
manufacturers like Seven and Colnago.

The bike show is expected to include bikes from Europe, North America,
and even Australia. Early examples with include a 1938 Schwinn
Paramount (US, first year made) fixed gear with wood rims, a 1953 Claud
Butler tandem, and a 1953 Bianchi Campione del Mundo. Later works
will include bike from the likes of Hetchins, Holdsworth, Raleigh, Jack
Taylor and Hurlow from England; Benotto, Bianchi, Cinelli, Colnago,
Frejus, Legnano, Dr Rosa and Masi from Italy, and the incredibly elegant
and well-integrated French touring bicycles of Herse, Rochet, and Singer.
Plus, an extraordinary collection of earlier US icons like Bill Boston,
Drysdale, Eisentraut, Bruce Gordon, McLean, Merz, and Washington's
own Proteus.

Indeed, June 8 is the third and final day of North America's largest
gathering of the "dyed-in-the-wool-jersey" vintage bike clan, a motley
crew of 20-somethings through geezers who relish the hand-built steel
frames of the 1930s - early 1980s, a time when craftsmanship ruled, a
time before indexed shifting and clipless pedals. Friday and Saturday
will feature seminars, rides, an auction, rides, a banquet, and some more
riding. This is the 11th "Cirque," and the first in the DC area. It's always
marked by a great deal of convivial conversation with the fisherman's
dedication to truth and understatement.
